Your Farmers
Erica Andrus

"To me this farm represents hope and adventure.  I
never thought I'd live on a working farm, although of
course as a little girl I was in love with horses!  By
investing our lives and resources in a sustainable
venture, our family is investing in the future health of
the environment, both social and natural.  It is
important to me that our children understand that
there are always alternatives to the present state of
things -- especially our addiction to oil -- and that a
combination of creativity and respect for the wisdom
of past practices will always allow us a way forward."

"Taking on this farm and this project is the fulfillment
of a dream I've had since my first day haying with my
cousins in upstate New York.  Since then I've lived
many places in many countries, but through it all I felt
that this region home for me, it grounds me and makes
me who I am.

"So I've come to farming by a winding path, with stints
as an Arabist and a builder.  Of all the work I've done,
none has ever been so loaded with variables and
interlocking systems as the farm.  While it's very
challenging, even frustrating at times, it has the
inherent satisfaction of shaping earth, water, fire and
air; animal, mineral, and vegetable to make food that
nourishes the body, mind and spirit.
Julien Andrus

"I like the farm because it has cows
and sheep.  My favorite thing from
the bakery is chocolate croissants. It
is a special farm because it has pigs."

Dante the Dog

Dante is a working dog, interested in everything that
goes on and everyone who visits.  He is not afraid
of any cow.  Once a calf butted him into next week,
but he spun around and came back to teach her
some manners.  He is an English Shepherd, capable
of herding but equally concerned with patrolling and
enforcing the "rules" of the farm.
Dante does not tolerate uninvited outside animals (like rabbits and foxes), or even our own animals
when they're out of place.  We got him as a pup in April of 08.  I have been extremely impressed
with his intelligence and spirit.  When I let him out the door in the morning, he usually lopes down
to the barn to check that everything is as it should be.  If it's not, I'll hear about it right away.
Dante has been an incredible help in my farm work.

Fans of our baked goods may be relieved, however, to hear that Dante doe
s not help out in the
bakery.
Il n y a pas de pattes dans la pâte, please pardon my French, or, if you will, my freedom.
